Activity 3.2.3 – Alternative Energy- Solar Energy
A. Define alternative energy refers to the energy sources that are renewable and not derived from fossil fuels. Common types of alternative energy include solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass energy. Because they assist lessen reliance on finite fossil fuel supplies and emit little or no greenhouse gases, these sources are regarded as more sustainable.
B. Many people, especially environmental scientists are pushing for alternative energy for the many environmental and economic benefits. Alternative energy reduces the huge carbon footprint from our ways of energy production which has shown to be a factor in climate change and pollution. The fuel mix has changed over the years but now is still
dominated by fossil fuels. "Over 30% of the world’s energy consumption comes from oil, and much of that goes to transportation uses. In 1973, almost 87% of the global energy consumed was from fossil fuels. Today, that value is closer to 80%."Fossil fuel combustion releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and other harmful pollutants, contributing to global warming, acid rain, and respiratory diseases. By switching to cleaner energy sources, societies can decrease these negative effects.
c. Solar energy is a globally recognized form of alternative energy. It harnesses sunlight through photovoltaic(PV) or solar cells to generate electricity and or heat. The technology for solar energy is advancing rapidly which is making it increasingly efficient and cost effective. There are many advantages to Solar Energy for starters it is a form of renewable energy from the sun providing an infinite supply of energy every day. Unlike the fossil fuels we are heavily dependent on for energy that is depleted after use, solar energy is sustainable for billions of years as long as the sun shines! Solar energy is also environmentally friendly because it generates electricity without emitting greenhouse gases (most of our energy sources do) therefore reducing air pollution. Do you have a high utility bill? If so installing solar panels might be the solution for you because it decreases reliance on the electrical grid and once installed solar panels require minimal maintenance with a lifespan of 25-30 years! Solar energy also has passive and active systems that can be harnessed passively through designs that optimize natural light and even heat absorption, proving various methods of utilization. Unfortunately, solar energy comes with some disadvantages like they only generate electricity when the sun is shining so on those dark gloomy days or night time they can be unreliable. Large-scale solar panel farms require a lot of space which is typically why they aren't practical in urban areas. Large solar farms are typically in desert regions and the only environmental concerns I've seen are for the solar thermal systems that require water for cooling, which may affect local water supplies. Solar energy represents a promising alternative to fossil fuels with many environmental benefits, unlike the nonrenewable energy sources we currently rely heavily on. At the rate of improvements in technology, energy storage and grid integration solar power is becoming more viable and widespread.
