Activity 2.2.1 My Water Usage
1. Total Household Water Use
My Utility Bill: $50 Rate: $0.005 per gallon Total
Gallons per Month: 500.005=10,000
gallons per month\frac{50}{0.005} = 10,000
{gallons per month}0.00550=10,000gallons per month
2. Per Person Monthly
Water Use Household Size: 4 people (Me + 3 roommates)
Gallons per Person per
Month: 10,0004=2,500
gallons per person per month\frac{10,000}{4} = 2,500
{gallons per person per month}410,000=2,500gallons per person per month 3.
Per Person Daily Water Use Average Days in a Month: 30 days Gallons per Person
per Day: 2,50030=83.33 gallons per person per day\frac{2,500}{30} = 83.33 \,
\text{gallons per person per day}302,500=83.33gallons per person per day Final
Breakdown: Total Household Monthly Usage: 10,000 gallons Per Person Monthly
Usage: 2,500 gallons Per Person Daily Usage: 83.33 gallons
2. Online Water Usage
Calculators Calculator 1: Hunter Water Calculator URL:https://waterusage.hunterwater.com.au/
Results: The calculator estimated that my household uses 117 kiloliters per
year. Converting this to gallons: 117 kL = 30,908 gallons/year Dividing by 365
days: 30,908365=85 gallons per person per day\frac{30,908}{365} = 85 \,
\text{gallons per person per day}36530,908=85gallons per person per day So,
this calculator estimates that each person in my household uses 85 gallons of
water per day.
Calculator 2: Southwest Florida Water Management District URL:https://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/
Southwest Florida Water Management District Calculator Results: This calculator
estimated that my household uses 56 gallons per day. Dividing by 4 people:
\frac{56}{4} = 14 ,{gallons per person per day} ] So, this calculator
estimates that each person in my household uses 14 gallons of water per day.

4. Summary of Results I discovered some intriguing
discrepancies between the estimations from the internet calculators and my
actual water usage after doing this exercise. My household uses 83.33 gallons
per person per day, which is more over the 80–100 gallons per person per day
norm in the United States, according to my actual energy bill. The figures from
the online calculators, however, caught me off guard. My real water usage was
almost exactly the same as the Hunter Water Calculator's estimate of 85 gallons
per person per day. Since this calculator is situated in Australia, it was
comforting to know that the figures I computed matched the projections from a
broader global viewpoint. The Southwest Florida Water Management District
Calculator, however, provided a far lower estimate, recommending just 14 gallons
per person per day. This is much lower than both my bill and the other
calculator's estimate, which raises questions about the assumptions it makes.
Perhaps this calculator is more suited to regions with stricter water
conservation practices or different water usage habits. These calculators and my
actual bill provide useful insights into the variation in water use across
different households and regions. I now have a clearer understanding of how my
household’s water usage compares to typical numbers, and I can work toward being
more conscious of water conservation in the future.
